Why title width matters more than character count

Google doesn't cut titles off at a set number of characters, it cuts them off at a set width on screen. That's why two titles of exactly the same length can behave completely differently in the search results: a title full of wide letters like W and M runs out of room long before one made up of narrow letters like i and l. The old advice about staying under 60 characters is a rough approximation of this, and it's wrong often enough to cost you clicks.

This tool measures every title the same way a browser does, rendering it in Arial at 20px, the font and size Google uses for desktop titles, and comparing the result against the roughly 580 pixels it will display. The bar under each title shows how much of that space you've used, so you can see at a glance which ideas will show in full and which will be trimmed to an ellipsis.

How to get the most from it

  • Enter the keyword as you'd search it. The generator recognises how-to phrasing and questions, and reshapes the formulas to suit, so “how to lower cost per click” produces different ideas to “cost per click”.
  • Watch for the keyword up front flag. Titles that lead with the keyword tend to hold up better when a title gets truncated, because the part that matters has already been read.
  • Use the comparison and location fields. Filling either one unlocks a set of comparison or local formulas that often map neatly onto the way people actually search.
  • Treat the output as a starting point. These are proven headline shapes, not finished copy. The best title is usually one of these formulas rewritten in your own voice, with a specific detail only you can add.
